Why Colostrum Therapy?

Chronic Disease Prevalence & Leaky Gut Syndrome

Chronic diseases are the LEADING causes of death and disability in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

  • As of 2012, nearly half of all adults (117 million Americans) had one or more of 10 different chronic health conditions.
  • One of every four adults had two or more chronic health conditions.
  • Seven of the top ten causes of death in 2010 were chronic diseases.
  • 86% of all healthcare spending in 2010 was for individuals with one or more chronic health conditions.
  • Approximately 25% of individuals with chronic diseases also have some type of activity limitation.

These statistics may seem scary, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg. There are more than eighty recognized autoimmune disorders, yet the CDC’s statistics only consider 10 chronic conditions. The actual number of Americans with chronic diseases and autoimmune conditions is likely to be vastly higher. So much higher, that it’s at epidemic proportions and will only continue to escalate.

Chronic disease exerts both a financial and human cost which in turn, decreases the overall quality of life. Experts suggest that nearly every American will die as a result of a chronic disease, and in many cases, death will come prematurely. Instead of treating the symptoms of chronic disease with pharmaceutical therapies, an increasing number of physicians and healthcare practitioners are turning to treating the primary cause of chronic disease – Leaky Gut Syndrome.

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Leaky Gut Syndrome identifies an increasingly pervasive health disorder in which the lining of the small intestine becomes exceedingly permeable. The abnormally large spaces allow entry of toxic material into the bloodstream that would, in healthier circumstances, be repelled and eliminated. The gut becomes “leaky” in the sense that bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and their toxins, and undigested proteins and fats, nerve and connective tissue, and waste normally not absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a damaged and hyperpermeable gut lining. The antibodies created in response to these toxic substances attach themselves to various tissues throughout the body, create an allergic response, trigger the destruction of tissues and organs, and create inflammation. As toxicity increases, autoantibodies are created, and the destruction and inflammation becomes chronic.

Why is Leaky Gut Syndrome so Prevalent?

The overuse and misuse of prescription painkillers and over-the-counter NSAIDs has unwittingly condemned 100 million chronic pain sufferers to an existence with leaky gut and all of its ramifications. Compounding the problem is the prolific and unnecessary use of antibiotics, which led to the creation of “superbugs.” Oral antibiotics may be avoidable but antibiotic residues present in the food and water supply are not. This deadly combination of pain medications and antibiotic abuse has created a public health crisis, the likes of which physicians are certainly ill prepared to treat and definitely unable to diagnose responsibly.

How is Leaky Gut Syndrome Treated?

Research in the late 1990’s showed that bovine colostrum could heal the damage to the GI lining and permeability caused by NSAIDs. Because bovine colostrum is not species specific, it can significantly benefit all other mammals, including humans. Not only does colostrum contain growth factors to heal and prevent Leaky Gut Syndrome, but it also contains immune factors which are equally significant to human health. Calves are born without any immunity to airborne, disease-causing organisms, so their mothers’ colostrum must contain very large amounts of immune and growth factors. Bovine colostrum contains 30-40 times the amount of these factors as what is present in human colostrum, making it the richest and most health-enhancing colostrum available for human consumption. Colostrum’s unique and powerful healing components now show incredible promise for turning the tide on the prevention and treatment of the world’s increasing chronic health epidemic. PRO Colostrum-LD is the only colostrum utilized in clinical trials of Leaky Gut Syndrome.

How Does Colostrum Help the Immune System?

Colostrum contains proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs) which act as signaling molecules between cells to modulate the activity of the immune system by regulating the cytokine response. Some PRPs stimulate an underactive immune system, such as when it’s necessary to fight off an infection. These PRPs are effective at eliminating gut-based pathogens, such as those that cause HIV-associated diarrhea for which antibiotics are ineffective and antivirals are unavailable. Other PRPs can down regulate an overactive immune system, such as when there is too much inflammation. These PRPs quell the inflammatory response to prevent tissue damage once the infection has been defeated.

You may have been told that certain foods are the cause of a leaky gut. Not so. They’re a symptom of a leaky gut. And nearly every person with a chronic health complaint has Leaky Gut Syndrome and should be supplementing with PRO Colostrum-LD.

Warning: Not all colostrum on the market is equal. Not all colostrum is processed to ensure the bioactivity of the beneficial components. And if they’re not bioactive, they’re not going to provide the kind of results that PRO Colostrum-LD provides.
